The Docking of the tail

We believe it should be your choice as owners to dock your Australian Shepherd puppies tails or not. However all our pups will only be docked at three days old if a pup has been choosen and paid for in full before this time.

I know there are alot of strong opinions out there via this topic. It is the ASCA standard that Australian Shepherds tails are docked, however it is NOT required. All ASCA pups docked or not are completely capable of participating in all ASCA events. ASCA confirmation events are the only events where having a tail is considered a minor fault. 

Over the years we have had so many complaints, as times are changing about automatically docking our pups born with tails. Many potential owners now a days are coming to us wishing we would have kept their tails. Australian Shepherds tails are incredibly beautiful and being seen more and more especially in the agility program.

So here is our compromise... If you would like your Aussie's tail docked thats not a problem with us but you must pre pay for your puppy in full before it is 3 days old. Other wise we do not dock our Australian Shepherds.

Great Dane Ear Cropping

Our Great Dane puppies do not come cropped. Cropping is an optional surgical procedure that takes the natural ear and forms them up to a point. Ear cropping takes additional dedication by pups owners as the surgery alone does not make them stand. Puppies owners have to continue to wrap or have ears wrapped until they permanently stand, wrapping time can vary depending on the dog.  Ear cropping in no way is required by AKC. Great Danes can participate in all AKC events whether they are cropped or not. Ear croppings are done based on personal preference of the visual appearance of your dog.

We can offer this additonal procedure to our future puppy owners, however pups would have to stay longer in our care as ear cropping is done by our Vet. at 9-12 weeks. ALL costs associated with this optional surgical procedure is the new puppy owners full responsibility. Welch Farms will make NO guarantees that Ears will for sure stand because new pup owners will still be responsible for ear wrappings until ears stand permanently. Ear croppings done through our vet. is $575.00 dollars. Plus Great Dane pups left in our care starting at 9 weeks  of age due to getting their ears cropped,  there will be a $10.00 dollars per day charge for our time, food and ear care that we will be providing.

Puppies typically leave our care at 8 weeks of age and new pup owners may find it less expensive to have their ear cropping done in their area. Please do your research on not only ear croppings but making sure you find a vet. with plenty of provable, successful experience with cropping ears that also offers aftercare if you are not experienced with this. Please also make sure you find a vet with plenty of experience in providing excellent care to extra large breed dogs in general.
